Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder/GPS Combo Review

Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder Sonar GPS
Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder Sonar GPS

If you enjoy fishing as a hobby, then you should definitely consider investing in the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder/GPS Combo. This fish finder is relatively new on the market, yet very popular among fishermen because it features technology that previously cost thousands of dollars, yet the gadget itself only costs a few hundred. As a fisherman, you’ll be very impressed with everything the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder can do.

Sounder

The Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder/GPS Combo uses the Clear Pulse CHIRP sonar as its sounder. Unlike most other sounders, the CHIRP sonar emits many sonar waves instead of just one beam of sonar waves. This allows you to see a very clear picture of underwater. The picture you’ll get with the CHIRP sonar is superior to the best Down Imaging Sonar and DownScan. The technology of the CHIRP sonar is so advanced that it allows to see the shape of fish that are underwater.

Unfortunately, if you’re a professional angler, you many dislike the fact that you cannot tweak the sonar to fit your own personal preferences.

Display

The display of the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder/GPS Combo is also very impressive. The display is LED backlit. A great advantage of this display is that it is viewable in the sunlight, which should prove very useful to fishermen, especially those who plan to do most of their fishing during the summer. It is the LED backlit display that ensures you maximum visibility even if you’re viewing the display in direct sunlight.

A disadvantage of this display is its size. The screen of one model measures 5.7 inches diagonally. Other models measure up to 7 inches. If you previously had a fish finder with a much larger screen, the smaller display may take some time for you to get used to.

Fortunately, due to the amazing clarity and resolution of the screen, the size of the display shouldn’t be too much of an issue for you. The resolution of the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder’s display is 640 x 480 pixels, which is amazing for a display of such a size.

While most other fish finders, such as the Hummingbird & Lowrance, only utilize two different frequencies by mixing the results together, the Dragonfly fish finder uses the results of the whole spectrum of frequencies (from high to low). The result of this is absolutely stunning clarity.

The down imaging of the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder is always for good. It’ll show you things that you wouldn’t be able to see on most other fish finders. Unfortunately, this Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder doesn’t include side imaging, yet you may not miss this aspect too much due to the amazing quality of the down imaging.

Accessories

The Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder also comes with various accessories, such as a power cable, the Transom mount transducer, as well as the quick release swivel bracket.

Transducer

One of the main things you should know about the transducer of this fish finder is that it is very large. A major benefit of this transducer is just how strong and sturdy it is. You can rely on the transducer to be still attached and in good condition, even after going on multiple fishing trips and running into many rocks, stumps, and other debris.

Quick Release Swivel Bracket

The transducer has a quick release safety feature, enabled by the quick release swivel bracket accessory that comes with the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder/GPS Combo. If you hit something, the swivel bracket allows the transducer to break away and pop up. The way the hinged bracket stays in place is by clipping down. The bracket also has a tension screw, which you can adjust to make it easier or harder for the transducer to pop up.

If you don’t want your transducer to pop up at all, you can install a screw through the bracket’s bottom. This will prevent the transducer from popping up at all by locking them together. Some customers do this because they find this safety feature frustrating, as you have to get into the water to reset the fish finder, and the fish finder will be completely useless unless you do so.

GPS

The Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder/GPS Combo has a 50-channel internal GPS. The GPS is built into the fish finder and, with its fast-acquisition technology, ensures greater navigation confidence for fishermen. The GPS will also provide you with readings for speed. Not only is the 50-channel GPS built-in, but the fish finder device also has a temperature sensor built-in.

Price

The great thing about the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder is its price. You can expect to spend about $500 to $700 on this fish finder, especially if you opt to buy it from an online retailer like Amazon. While this is certainly very expensive, it’s actually pretty cheap when you compare it to the cost of other fish finders. Other fish finders can easily cost you $1500 to $2000.

However, despite the lower price, you are still getting quality. In fact, the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder has far better technology than many of the more expensive fish finders out there.

As you can see, most fishermen would benefit immensely by using the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder/GPS Combo. This fish finder features incredibly advanced technology, even more so than many of the more expensive fish finders available on the market. If you want a gorgeous, quality fish finder that you use on your kayak or any other boat at a low price, the Raymarine Dragonfly Fishfinder is definitely for you.
